How to Spin Yarn: Using My New Lendrum Spinning Wheel

By: Missy B

I have been wanting a spinning wheel for several years now, ever since I learned how to spin yarn on a drop spindle. I took one lesson here at the end of summer from a local spinner at her yarn shop, and I tried out a few wheels at the Sedalia Fiber Festival last year. I ended up really liking the Lendrum double treadle spinning wheel. I found the double treadle much easier and I could get a continuous movement going. To me a single treadle is kind of like trying to ride a bicycle with only on leg. But with the Lendrum, in about 5 minutes it clicked and I was spinning yarn.

Learning to spin can be tricky and frustrating. It takes a lot of tweaking the machine to find just the right speed and tension, and with your feet and hands all working at once, it’s a bit like rubbing your belly and patting your head. I took another lesson with the local spinner last week and didn’t need much help, I pretty much had it down… it’s just a matter of practice now. So here’s a look at getting set up and spinning yarn.

The Lendrum spinning wheel I have can be purchased here. Spinning wheels aren’t cheap so you should definitely use someone else’s a few times and make sure you really, really want to spin your own yarn. There are some less expensive models available on Amazon. Read the reviews on there and you might find something that fits your needs for less. Experienced woodworkers may be able to make their own, but this was way beyond our woodworking skills around here.

Great video! This brings back so many memories as I used to sit and spin for hours. Someday I may have to invest in a similar wheel. I’ve only got a drop spindle right now.

Fantastic video! Even though I have been watching other videos, this clarified a few things. I like the fact that it covers just a few basics and not everything at once. It also help me decide which wheel to buy. A Lendrum DT. Thank you for posting this.

Not everyday I find a homesteader that spins their own yarn. Awesome video!
