24 hours from now I’ll be driving a moving van through Kansas or Nebraska on my way back east to our new property in Southwestern Virginia. It has been a whirlwind month so far. Everyone keeps asking me if I’m excited to finally be moving “out to the farm” but either it hasn’t hit me yet or I’ve just been too busy to let it register because I’ve just been going through the motions and checking off tasks without actually thinking about what a big deal this is. Subconsciously I must realize it, however, because I have been waking up with aching jaws, apparently clenching and grinding my teeth during the night.
Denver has been great to us, but it is time to move on to this next chapter – for better or worse – and give it our best shot. We’ll find out if that’s good enough sometime within the next few years. I hope you will continue to come back and share the journey with us.
RE: The title of this post – We have a few apple trees on the property, but no peaches… yet.
I’m a big fan of your blog. I’m glad you enabled comments so that all your fans can show support.
Keep us up-to-date.
i just found your blog today and I love it! I have been devouring anything related to Voluntary Simplicity because that is the journey I am on also.
I dont think my journey will be as drastic as yours, but I am def searching for a simpler lifestyle with less stress.
I will be a regualar reader of your blog.
Welcome to southwest Virginia! You’ll stop clenching your teeth before a year is out — I know I did.
I stumbled across a video on youtube of you installing your bees into your topbar, not even realizing you were here in Denver. I just finished (except for legs) building my own topbar and am hoping also to catch a swarm. I made the connection after surfing over to this site and recognizing the picture as one from the paper last year.
You’re a few steps ahead of me on the journey, but I think we’re walking the same path. With three kids (and no more!) the logistical planning is a little more involved, but my hope is in raising them right being able to involve them in the gardening, beehandling, raising chickens, etc. and teaching them real useable skills.
Congratulations!!
Eric
I was just referred to your blog by the woman who was house-sitting your farm. She referred me because this is the sort of transition I would like to make someday (hopefully not too far in the future!). Interestingly, I just moved from the east coast (NJ) to northern Colorado, the reverse of the trek you are now on.
I found your blog at about the time you posted your last March entry before this one, so I’ve been waiting on the edge of my seat for this entry. Congrats on this huge step in your lives! You all definitely have my admiration…and my prayers. (And you met Joel Salatin, who probably lives not far from you!)
