Our First Guests

[ 5 ] April 11, 2010 |

The Aluminum Bliss CrewWe just had the most wonderful surprise guests. As Missy and I were applying a coat of linseed oil to an old table that was left in the barn a big white truck pulling a shiny silver airstream camper pulled up to the house. The driver leaned out the window and asked if I was Everett.

Seeing the confused look on my face, he quickly explained that they were readers of our blog and were driving through so they thought they’d stop by. All I could think of to say was “You’re kidding right?” Missy likes to kid me that only my mom reads this blog (actually, my mom doesn’t read it and neither does Missy) so despite hundreds of Feedburner subscribers, I was beginning to think maybe she was right. So yea – “You’re kidding right?”

Then I read the side of the camper and saw www.aluminumbliss.com and it all started to make sense. These folks had stopped by the blog a few months back and I went to check out their site (this post, actually), and I remembered they were looking into a farm too.

So thanks to the blogosphere we were honored to show our very first guests, Lani and Chris, around our little farm. It is a total wreck right now (boxes everywhere in the house; paint peeling off of every building; decades of junk piled up…) but I was all too excited to give the first tour. …so excited, in fact, that I don’t think I let Missy get a word in edgewise (I’m so lucky she puts up with me) and didn’t have time to ask all I wanted to ask about the Aluminum Bliss tour. I suppose that’s ok because A: Missy has the rest of our lives to roll her eyes at my rambling and B: Lani and Chris have a great blog that we can all go read to follow their journey: Aluminum Bliss (how it all started). Check out the date on that post – June 2009! They’ve been on the road almost an entire year! And did I mention Lani is expecting pretty soon? How cool would it be to have a kid who was “born on the road”? How cool would it be to BE a kid who was born on the road? It makes me want to break out the Jack Kerouac book box, wherever that happens to be buried at the moment.

The above photo was taken around sunset out by the chicken coop. Missy was behind the iphone so I’m including a recent picture of her here. One of these days I’m going to talk her into actually writing a blog post. Maybe now that she believes me when I say my mom isn’t the only person who reads this blog she’ll be more inclined to share her experiences.

Also, check out The Points of Light Institute if you’re interested in volunteerism. I have to thank Chris for introducing us to this great resource.

Just when I was beginning to wonder if anyone would actually drive all the way out to Hillsville to stay on our farm (we hope to open a farmstay next year) our first guests drop in by surprise and give me hope that we can create a destination worth the drive. It made us wonder how many other lives The Aluminum Bliss crew has touched along the way during their year on the road. And like a flash of light, The Aluminum Bliss slipped around the bend on it’s way to meet some more odd fella’s. God speed be with you and may your journey be blessed.

I promise a video within the next few days – big-ass-wood-pile-be-dammed!

Thank you so much for the tour! We really enjoyed our visit. The land is beautiful and we look forward to seeing you again and the progress you’ve made. Keep living the dream!

  2. Mark says:

You guys seem to be having fun. If I’m ever driving by now I know I can stop in. :)

Did some of the animals come with the farm?

  3. Mr. Simpleton says:

    Mark,

Yep we inherited two hen turkeys, one tom turkey (and he’s a mean sumbich), eight hens, two roosters, nine guineas… and the neighbor has about ten cows and one donkey grazing our pasture for the summer.

    Stop by any time!

  4. Just popped over from Lani & Chris’ blog and so read a few of your posts.

It sounds like you have a cool place and what great fun you will have in following your dreams.

If you want to check out another blog, feel free to pop over to mine. We are working/traveling with a carnival for the season – the first for us.

  5. Mr. Simpleton says:

    Hello Alli –

I just checked out your site. Pretty sweet! I traveled with a carnival in Australia for a couple of months, but it wasn’t as long and didn’t cover near as much ground. I was also by myself. Traveling like that with your family has to be a whole different perspective!

Good luck and have fun! Thanks for stopping by.

    Everett
