We Are Walking Trees and Floating Plants Made of Grist From the Mills of God

We Are Walking Trees and Floating Plants Made of Grist From the Mills of God

[ 3 ] By: Everett

The title of this post is paraphrasing a quote from one of my favorite passages of all time of this year. The passage I have excerpted below was written by American naturalist John Burroughs, pictured here. This was a man who truly knew how to observe nature by removing all the crap that filters the [...]

Hello My Name is Frankenstein

[ 23 ] By: Everett

Update: B. Nine. Calling B9. Anyone? B9? Oh, that’s me. Just talked to the surgeon. Bingo! I know the Title should have been “Frankenstein’s Monster” but it doesn’t sound as good. Poor Dr. Frankenstein. What’s worse? Having your name used as a verb, or as another proper noun? Google it. So I’ve been procrastinating. Here, let [...]

The Resurrection of Rural America: A Rainy Day Rant

The Resurrection of Rural America: A Rainy Day Rant

[ 19 ] By: Everett

Perhaps the title is misleading, as “rural America” has never died. She has changed; she has suffered; but like the strong-willed people who make up her population, she has persevered despite having a large portion of her three greatest treasures stolen over the last sixty-odd years. Those three things are her people, her economy, and [...]

Meet Our Neighbors, John and Janet!

[ 3 ] By: Guest Bloggers

We’re Everett and Missy’s farm neighbors. This is our story about “Living the Simple Life”. Working in the big city for years certainly had its conveniences; coffee shops, bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. However for us, the ugly truth of the big city was way too close; crime, obnoxious traffic, career stress, inconsiderate people, politics, and [...]

Porky the Pig – Raising Our First Hog for Slaughter

Porky the Pig – Raising Our First Hog for Slaughter

[ 2 ] By: Amber

I was looking around some of my files and found this brief write-up about my first encounter with the slaughtering of a hog.  Both my father and husband are deer hunters so I have seen animals cut open and “processed.”  Tommy and I have also processed our chickens if they were roosters or when they [...]

How Work ‘Should’ Be…

How Work ‘Should’ Be…

[ 17 ] By: Everett

I have to admit I was a little upset about all the work I put into the new site not getting the reception I’d hoped for. In the end, I’m sure it will all work out. But right now I just want to tell a little story about how my life is different now than [...]

Rethinking Voluntary Complexity

Rethinking Voluntary Complexity

[ 3 ] By: Amber

When I first heard the phrase Rethinking Voluntary Complexity I was struck with an internal bolt of lightning. This concept of voluntary complexity is something I’ve pondered for the last several years, but I never had a name for it. I could sit and think, if I reduced this or didn’t use that we wouldn’t [...]

Introducing Tommy & Amber: TreeStone Farm

[ 11 ] By: Amber

Hello great world! This is our first time blogging. We are truly passionate about living close to the earth and being as self-sufficient as possible. We were inspired and encouraged by a friend to share our stories with others. Although we are far from perfection, we’ve been pursuing a homesteading lifestyle for over a decade. [...]

What I’m Thankful For

What I’m Thankful For

[ 26 ] By: Everett

First and foremost, we are both thankful that Mrs. Simpleton is pregnant. That’s right – we’re going to have a baby! I may have hinted around about it in a previous post, but we didn’t want to tell anyone until she was further along. Now she is almost twelve-weeks and things seem to be going just fine. So on behalf of both of us, we are most thankful for the chance to start a family. And all we hope for at this moment is a healthy child.

Seasonal Goals – 2010 Thru 2011

This list below is an ongoing seasonal to-do list around here. By ‘ongoing’, I mean that it is not finished and subject to change. These are some of the smaller projects that will help us reach our long-term goals for the next two years.
