Should Missy Be Jealous?
Bib Mamma (our turkey hen) has a crush on me. Yesterday we were finishing up painting the fence (FINALLY!) and she followed me around all day cooing. When I turned to look at her or walked toward her she would flatten herself down on the ground. I told her that I didn’t go for turkeys; that is wasn’t her, it was me. I told her to go up in the woods to find some wild Tom to hang out with for awhile. But she tagged along all day anyway. Should Missy be jealous?
We dispatched the tom (Jackson) last year because he was the leading suspect in a hen homicide – likely a result of his roid rage. So now poor Big Mamma is the only turkey left on the farm. She follows the guineas around, but they are too fast for her. She follows the chickens around, but they just ignore her.
There have been dozens and dozens of wild turkeys that have come into the backyard, once with a flock of about twenty, including at least one tom. Hopefully they’ll come back and keep her company for a day so we can get some turkey chicks. If not, I may let her lay on a few chicken eggs again this year. She seemed to really enjoy it last summer.
This happened on the first day we noticed some green around the lilies and a few crocus shoots coming up out of the ground. The temperature is supposed to get up to 65 degrees today. Spring is in the air!

We believe that humankind has lost some important things in the march toward progress. That is not to say progress and simplicity are mutually exclusive. We believe we can have both, and this site catalogs our journey as we try to do exactly that.

Poor Big Mamma. I read the similar incident in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and thought it really curious. This sorta proves that animals can tell the difference between human males and females! An interesting thing.
