Video: Washing Machine Cider Press Instructions

[ 7 ] October 5, 2011 |

Our friend Lydia sent us a link to an NPR story about a couple who created a washing-machine cider press after reading this Mother Earth News article about making The Maytag Cider Press. WOW, great idea! Has anyone tried this?

I’d like to give it a shot, but neither the NPR clip, nor the MOE article has real instructions, although MOE does have a few small, grainy, black-and-white photos. Looking at a few forums I cam across a link to this YouTube Video, which I think is going to do the trick for us. The question is, should we wait until next summer when there are apples on the trees again, or give it a try sooner with market-bought apples?

This is great, and good timing too! We were thinking hard about buying a Happy Valley press on Craigslist (in fact I brought home a couple buckets of apples to press) but couldn’t make ourselves fork out all that money. Now we just need to find an old washer… I don’t think our front-loader will work. I do wish they had videoed cleaning it out afterwards ;-)

De for cleaning out I’d try a shop-vac. Then you can dump it out on your compost pile!

It’s October. Where do you live that it’s not apple season? Now is prime time for gleaning apples in most of the United States.

    Hi,
The last time I checked, your paradise was listed as sold. Have I lost my chance at paradise, or is your place still for sale?
(I don’t think I had the money last time and am still a working stiff) Can we play “Let’s make a deal”

  5. Everett says:

Dtrain, I think there are plenty of places with apples to be gleaned around here, but all of the apples on our trees have already fallen. We don’t have any on our property. Missy brought up her concerns about contaminants left over in the washing machines from years of use. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

  6. Everett says:

Paul yep we’ve sold it. We’re not in a new paradise!
