We Can Not Can Much This Year But We’re Canning What We Can Can
Question: How many times can you repeat the same word in a title before it stops making sense?
I didn’t get a garden in this year because I decided to take the fresh start we have here as an opportunity to get the garden soil I always wanted. With that in mind, I have put down straw-bales and look forward to moving them next spring and uncovering the wonderful no-till garden bed that the worms, bugs, rodents, snakes, and microorganisms made for us. I’m still debating whether I want to move the leftover straw to a compost pile, or leave it there and try a Ruth Stout garden. Maybe I’ll do both.
But that’s next year and, in the meantime, we don’t have much food to can. So far we’ve been limited to what nature provides without any help from ourselves. In our case, that includes apples, blueberries and blackberries.
We froze the blueberries and canned the apples and blackberries. Stay tuned for a post about how to make apple sauce and apple butter next week. I was going to post about how to make blackberry jam, but some folks at work asked me if I could write a blog over there since they don’t get much content from the male perspective. Pick the berries, wash the berries, mill the berries, boil the berries, add pectin, add sugar, mix the berries, pour into jars, put on lids, boil the jars, cool the jars, enjoy!
